History Of Heathcliff House
Built originally in 1861 and extended before 1900, Heathcliff House was formerly known as St Bernard and was Torre Vicarage. You may be interested to know that Heathcliff House has close connections with Agatha Christie and when visiting us you are walking in her footsteps! Agatha’s parents Frederick Miller and Clara Bohemer lived close by at Ashfield on Barton Road, they were friends with the Vicar and young Agatha accompanied them to tea with him. Later Agatha used to visit and consult with the Reverend Harry Petty on the role of priests, bishops and on complex ecclesiastical matters within her novels. Agatha was also friendly with the Vicar’s daughter Gwen Petty who was a teacher at Torquay Girls Grammar School for many years. Gwen recalled Mrs Miller – “elegant in a long black coat, wide-brimmed black hat and carrying a tall silver topped ebony stick’ – as a lively and charming visitor. Agatha continues to be the best- selling novelist of all time with a career that spans six decades and it is likely that, in 1930, she found inspiration for writing The Murder at the Vicarage from her family’s friendship with the Vicar and visits to the vicarage at 16 Newton Road!
Brixham's Pirate Festival 2025
Brixham's Pirate Festival 2025
3rd-5th May.
Billed as "the annual gathering of the world's most infamous pirates and lowly scallywags," over the past decade the event has grown into hugely popular celebration of all things piratical. And all with the perfectly authentic backdrop of this charming historic port, which has been home to a number of smugglers and pirates over the centuries.
Why not dress up as a pirate (an awful lot of people do) and travel to Brixham by boat from Torquay and Paignton for the most authentic arrival. The whole town is decked out in "skull and cross bones" while the sound of seagulls, shanties and lots of people saying "arghhhh me hearties" floats through the air. There's a real party atmosphere, with absolutely everyone joining in the spirit of the event.
Wander round the harbour and discover all sorts pirate antics taking place, including live music, street performers, street theatre, balloon modelling, historical re-enactments, fancy dress competitions and themed food and drink offerings. The daytime and early evenings are brilliant fun for all the family, while later on the adults can warm their tums with extra rations of rum in the many harbourside bars. You are more likely to stick out if you aren't dressed like a pirate.
